Protect Your Pet from Parasites Year-Round

Prevention keeps your pet healthy—and your home parasite-free.

Parasites might be tiny, but the problems they cause can be anything but. That’s why Central Hospital for Animals Herrin offers complete parasite prevention for dogs and cats, including heartworm testing, deworming, flea and tick control, and protection against mites. Whether your pet is scratching more than usual or just due for their monthly prevention, we’re here to help.

There are many types of parasites that can affect dogs and cats in Southern Illinois. Some live externally on the skin (like fleas and ticks), while others live internally in the intestines (like roundworms and hookworms) or the bloodstream (like heartworms). While it’s common for pets to encounter parasites, it doesn’t have to become a problem. Our team will help you identify risk factors, diagnose symptoms, and create a customized prevention plan that fits your pet’s lifestyle.

Each type of parasite brings different challenges:

  • Heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause serious illness in dogs and cats if left untreated.
  • Ticks often appear during warm, humid months and may cause fatigue or weakness.
  • Intestinal worms (including roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms) can affect your pet’s appetite, weight, and overall health.
  • Fleas cause itchiness and can quickly multiply in your home.
  • Mites can lead to ear infections or skin irritation, especially in young or senior pets.

You may notice signs like itching, vomiting, pale gums, or visible worms in the stool—but not all pets show symptoms. That’s why regular exams and year-round preventatives are key. During your visit, we’ll examine your pet, test for parasites when needed, and recommend the best treatments based on age and exposure risk.

At Central Hospital for Animals Herrin, we offer:

  • Monthly heartworm preventatives in chewable or topical form
  • Prescription flea and tick preventatives, including collars, tablets, and spot-ons
  • Deworming plans tailored to your pet’s age and parasite history
  • Topical treatments for ear mites and skin parasites
  • Safe options for puppies and kittens as young as 2–8 weeks

It doesn’t matter how clean or healthy your pet seems—parasites can still find a way in. That’s why prevention matters. Let’s keep your pet happy, healthy, and parasite-free.
